Pacific Environment welcomes ambition on global shipping target
Date: April 20, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States announced today a new commitment to helping achieve an absolute zero-emission international shipping industry by 2050.

The following is a statement by Madeline Rose, Pacific Environment’s Climate Campaign Director:

“The United States has committed to a historic goal of pursuing an absolute zero-emission shipping industry by 2050. The U.S. commitment to absolute zero, not ‘net-zero,’ can be a political game changer for the shipping industry. The announcement today by Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry is the Biden-Harris administration’s most ambitious step yet to bring international shipping into a sustainable, zero-emission future. Though we will continue to advocate for a zero-emission shipping industry by 2035, Pacific Environment welcomes the United States’ commitment to a zero-emission shipping future as an important first step.”
