Our Top 5 of 2019

With the support of activists like you, we are building people power around the Pacific Rim to fight climate change, defend the oceans, promote open and inclusive societies, and ensure a just transition to a clean energy future for all.

Here are five accomplishments I’m especially proud of this year. They would not have been possible without your generosity and passion.

We are assisting Arctic Indigenous leaders to participate in international marine policy-making. Indigenous subsistence traditions and livelihoods depend on a healthy marine environment.

In China and Vietnam, we are funding and training local leaders to stop plastic trash from flowing into the ocean. They also challenge waste incineration, the petrochemical industry’s preferred option, as a false, polluting solution.

We are advocating a network of protective measures throughout Arctic and Alaskan waters. These protections will keep thousands of whales, walruses, and seals, millions of birds, and many other wild species safe from increasing ship traffic and other industrial activities.

We are building an international coalition to pressure the shipping industry to move quickly beyond fossil fuels. We need aggressive zero-emission plans in place by 2030 to help avert the worst consequences of the climate crisis.

We are mobilizing thousands of citizens across China and elsewhere on the Pacific Rim to influence environmental policies and projects. And we are training hundreds of local leaders to submit public comments, participate in legal actions, and meet with government officials and business leaders to clean up air and water pollution.

I’m truly grateful for your activism and support—we and our partners on the frontlines couldn’t have been this effective without you.

Thank you for standing in solidarity and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2020 to you and yours.
