Joanne Spalding

Director

Joanne Spalding is Deputy Legal Director and Chief Climate Counsel at the Sierra Club, where she has worked for 20 years. She directs the Sierra Club’s federal and state climate litigation and regulatory work. She is one of the lead NGO attorneys in the litigation over EPA’s greenhouse gas regulations. Previously, she litigated numerous challenges to coal-fired plants and highway projects. She formerly worked at Adams, Broadwell representing labor unions in environmental cases. Joanne received her B.A. with honors from Northwestern University and her J.D. Order of the Coif from University of California Hastings College of the Law. She clerked for the Honorable Melvin Brunetti of the U.S. Court of appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
