California leads the way in clean shipping this World Ocean Month

At any given moment, more than 50,000 merchant ships are crossing the oceans. These ships are moving 90% of world trade, often burning the world’s dirtiest fossil fuels that contribute to climate change and sicken millions of people living in and near portside communities. This World Ocean Month, Grace Healy, deputy director of Pacific Environment’s Climate Program, spoke with the national newswire Public News Service about California’s leadership in zero-emission shipping and how the state is leading an international shift to cleaner vessels and ports.

JUSTICE & EQUITY

Youth rising for climate justice and community transformation

At Sustainable San Mateo County’s third annual Youth for Climate Policy event, our California Climate Policy Director Davina Hurt reflected on how environmental justice, transportation and equity intersect to shape our communities. From the impact of port pollution to the potential of policy tools like California’s landmark renewable energy legislation known as SB 1000, the virtual conversation highlighted the need for planning that centers justice and lived experience.

Drawing on her upbringing and her years in public service, Hurt reminds us that environmental justice “is not about guilt — it’s about reflection, responsibility and reckoning.” As youth continue to raise their voices, events like these affirm that a more sustainable and equitable future is already being imagined.

INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

California leaders head to Europe in search of climate-smart shipping solutions

Pacific Environment and partners are leading a delegation of California regulators across Europe to explore how the world’s most advanced ports and policymakers are tackling maritime pollution. From visits with clean shipping innovators like the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center to meetings with European Union regulators and labor leaders, the fact-finding tour is designed to accelerate zero-emission shipping and climate-resilient port infrastructure back home. These cross-cultural exchanges are planting the seeds for stronger international collaboration — and bold action to clean up global shipping. Follow along as we chart a course toward a healthier, climate-safe future.

Blame game won’t solve California’s climate and energy crisis

Following recent political criticism of California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph, Pacific Environment is offering perspective on what’s really at stake. In a recent statement, we emphasize the importance of staying focused on public health, clean air and long-term climate goals — not misdirected blame. As California works to transition away from fossil fuels, real accountability starts with the industries driving pollution, not the regulators working to protect communities.
