Pacific Environment is campaigning to end fossil fuel use, including to move ships, planes, and ports off fossil fuels entirely. Our strategies include creating strong regulatory frameworks to achieve 100% zero-emission ocean shipping on a timeline commensurate with the climate emergency, pressuring corporate customers to demand zero-emission ships, and influencing ports in the United States and internationally to end fossil fuel build out and ready themselves for 100% zero-emission ocean shipping instead.

Position
The Climate Campaigner, Northeast will implement Pacific Environment’s global campaigns to achieve 100% zero-emission ports and shipping on the East Coast, with a focus on the Port of New York and New Jersey. The successful candidate will work closely with local community partners, environmental justice partners, labor partners, policymakers, academic partners, and more to end ship and port pollution. This will include but not be limited to advancing strategies that build public and political awareness on the harms of current fossil-fueled global trade to frontline working-class communities and communities of color, compel major corporate polluters to transition to 100% zero-emission vessels, and help win policy changes at the local, regional, state, national, and international levels. You will help build power in local communities and serve as a trusted advisor and advocate to values-aligned partners and policymakers.

The ideal candidate has a record of successful grassroots organizing and winning campaigns through legislatures and/or regulatory bodies, a passion for moving society beyond fossil fuels, experience in large coalition efforts, and a commitment to environmental, racial, gender, and economic justice. (Please note: Shipping experience is not a prerequisite for this position; we are most interested in candidates with a record of accomplishment of successful grassroots organizing and winning campaigns.)

The Climate Campaigner, Northeast will report to Pacific Environment’s Climate Campaign Director, Ports. They will be part of our climate campaign team working to end fossil fuel pollution from ships, accelerate production of 100% zero-emission maritime technologies and fuels, and advance environmental justice in frontline and fence-line communities.

Location and Travel

This position is remote and requires working East Coast time zone hours, with a preference for physical presence in or near Newark, New Jersey. There will be regular in-person meetings in Newark and the greater New York City area. The position will involve domestic, and possibly international, travel. Pacific Environment is sensitive to COVID-19 and other potential obstacles to safe travel.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead local and regional strategies for PE’s global campaigns to end ship and port pollution
• Cultivate partnerships and coordinate closely with partner organizations in various coalitions – including community partners, labor partners, environmental justice partners, academic partners, and more – to broaden constituencies of support
• Directly advocate climate policy positions to policy makers at various levels of government, corporations, allies, and partners to advance shipping-specific policy changes using tactics such as civic engagement, community organizing, lobbying, nonviolent direct actions, communications campaigns, events, and more
• Produce technical analyses, memos, and advocacy products as needed
• Represent Pacific Environment with the press, in coalitions with key allies, and in key policy forums
• Other tasks as assigned

Key Qualifications

• We anticipate the ideal candidate will have between 3-6 years of relevant experience in campaigning, successful policy advocacy and organizing, including international experience
• A record of accomplishment of achievement in managing and winning campaigns
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
• Skill and comfort in building relationships with diverse audiences, including with policymakers, companies, coalition partners, community leaders and members, and members of the media
• Commitment to helping communities have a strong voice in decision-making
• Experience and expertise in renewable energy and/or climate issues and policies a plus
• Experience and expertise in racial, gender, and/or economic justice a plus
• Experience in working with a legislature or regulatory body a plus

Physical Requirements

The Climate Campaigner, Northeast work involves remaining in a stationary position and looking at a computer for long stretches of time, communicating with co-workers electronically, and occasional travel (including overnight travel), in-person meetings, or events. Compensation and Benefits

Pacific Environment provides compensation commensurate with experience and equitable with others on our team, plus a full benefits package for staff positions. The salary range for this position is $70,000 – $80,000 per year which is carefully considered to account for equity, and the final offer will be based on candidate’s qualifications. The employee will enjoy a flexible working environment with a dedicated, diverse group of colleagues.
