Plastic pollution is a full-scale crisis — harming biodiversity, driving climate change and threatening public health. Each day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks of plastic pollutes our oceans, rivers and lakes, putting marine life and entire ecosystems at risk. Microplastics are now everywhere: in our waters and air, in the food we eat and even in our bodies.
Beyond its impact on ecosystems and health, 99% of plastic is derived from fossil fuels and emits greenhouse gases throughout its life cycle. If plastic were a country, it would rank as the fifth-largest greenhouse gas emitter. Over the past 70 years, global production has skyrocketed by more than 22,000%.
That’s why we aim to reduce plastic production by 75% and phase out single-use plastics by 2040 — vital steps for keeping global warming within 1.5°C. Addressing the interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution requires systemic change to prevent further harm.
Working toward a future free of plastic pollution begins long before plastic waste reaches the ocean. At Pacific Environment, we focus on upstream solutions to address pollution at its source and develop sustainable systems for a cleaner, healthier future. We collaborate with local partners and global coalitions to curb plastic production and consumption, advocate for strong regulation of plastics, and build systems that prioritize reuse over single use. Our work includes:
Plastic pollution is a global crisis, but developing successful solutions often starts at the local level. Pacific Environment is scaling grassroots innovation and connecting local leadership with international policy advocacy. From neighborhood reuse stores to international treaty negotiations, we elevate community-led solutions and the changemakers behind them.
