The Port of New York and New Jersey are the busiest on the East Coast — and among the region’s largest sources of air pollution. In frontline communities like Newark’s South Ward, the Ironbound and Elizabeth, families breathe toxic emissions every day from ships, trucks and port equipment. Children, seniors and low-income families bear the heaviest burden, with higher rates of asthma, heart disease and climate risks. In New York City, residents of Redhook and Sunset Park live with black smoke from cruise ships idling in Brooklyn Terminal and fumes from commuter ferries.
We’re organizing to change that. Alongside residents, community and environmental justice leaders, labor allies and public health advocates, we’re pushing for zero-emission solutions that protect port-side communities, create good union jobs and move our region toward a healthier, more sustainable future.
